The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is the result of histories of communities blending their identities into an era of rediscovering our heritage. That interest is seeing a boost from Downtown Harlingen wanting to celebrate the Mexican heritage flowing through many RGV locals’ blood through its upcoming event.
Downtown Harlingen will host Fiesta de Piñatas from 4 pm to 9 pm on September 14 at the Lt. George Gutierrez Jr. Park and West Van Buren Street. This second attempt comes after poor weather conditions canceled 2023’s fiesta.
“Beyond celebrating our heritage, I feel this event is different from the events the city (of Harlingen) does in general,” Downtown Director Alexis Riojas said. “People are going to see a different part of downtown they’ve never seen before in an event aspect. They’re seeing Jackson Street most of the time, but this (event occurs at) La Pacita.”
Alongside traditional market vendors selling on-theme artisan items, a spectrum of food vendors will be selling Mexican foods. Of course, no fiesta would be complete without live music. The Selena Tribute Band will headline with Revo Band opening for them.
What makes any event fun is friendly competition. Like the margarita competition at Harlingen’s Margarita Fest held on August 10, Fiesta de Piñatas will have frijole and Michelada contests for local businesses to show off their skills.
To start the fire of a fiesta, a Lucha Libre will happen before the main event at 6 pm on September 13 at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium. Tickets opened on August 12 for $10 or $50 plus fees.
This event achieves the community engagement any city should do to keep residents happy. However, Director Riojas noted the city could see recognition from the Texas Downtown Association for their efforts.
