On Election Day on November 5, Harlingen residents voted for all 23 proposed amendments to the city charter. They also voted for three city commission seats for districts 3, 4, and 5. Not one candidate received the majority of the votes (51%) in their races, so citizens will need to vote again in a special runoff election.
For district 3, the runoff is between Commissioner Michael Mezmar and attorney Frank Lozano.
For district 4, the runoff is between Commissioner Frank Morales and Beto Pena, an investigator with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office. Former Commissioner Basilio “Chino” Sanchez had received the second-highest votes but unfortunately, he passed away on November 14. Therefore, Beto Pena replaced him with the third-highest votes received.
For district 5, the runoff is between Commissioner Rene Perez and reserve constable Nikki Alvarez-Daniell.
Early voting will take place from December 2 through December 10, with Election Day on Saturday, December 14. For polling locations, check the Cameron County Elections page, www.cameroncountytx.gov/elections.
