Sip, Savor, and Stay Awhile

The 83 Winery Brings a Taste of Fredericksburg to Harlingen

(This article was written by Remi Gibbs and was featured in the November 2024 issue of Explore Harlingen Magazine.)

If you’re looking for a cozy spot to unwind with a glass of wine, listen to live music, or gather with friends, Harlingen has just the place for you. Tucked away on Business 83, The 83 Winery is the product of a family’s dream that took root during the pandemic and has blossomed into one of the area’s most charming hangouts.

The story begins with Beata Dawi and her daughter, Ashley David. In 2019, after a memorable wine-tasting trip to Fredericksburg, TX, the duo returned home with a bold idea: “We need a winery in Harlingen!” Their enthusiasm, combined with Beata’s husband George Dawi’s extensive background in the food and beverage industry, laid the groundwork for what would become The 83 Winery.

When everything came to a halt during the pandemic, George surprised Beata and Ashley by finding the perfect spot for their winery—an old house on two acres of land. The home, though needing extensive renovation, had the charm they wanted, and with a lot of hard work, sweat, and family collaboration, they transformed it into a welcoming, vibrant space. A year and a half later, on December 3, 2021, The 83 Winery was born.

“Our goal was to create a place where people feel safe, comfortable, and like part of the family,” Beata shares. And she means it—Beata is often at the winery, greeting guests with her signature warmth and hospitality. Meanwhile, Ashley, now an assistant principal at Coakley Middle School, loves that the winery has become a gathering place for special events and celebrations.

Drink

While the initial dream of growing their own grapes proved to be more challenging than expected, Beata and Ashley pivoted to something just as exciting: curating a selection of boutique wines and sparkling favorites from Texas and beyond. But it’s not just about wine here. For those who prefer something else, The 83 Winery offers a full bar including exclusive cocktails (think fresh watermelon puree and muddled blueberries), whiskey, beer, and even cigars to enjoy on the deck.

Eat

Food is also a star at The 83 Winery. With their ever-popular charcuterie boards, flatbreads and pasta dishes, the family, under the guidance of their multi-talented manager, Saul Moreno, is expanding the kitchen to offer even more delicious options. Sunday brunch is on the near horizon. They will welcome families to enjoy great food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere—a unique offering for this 21-and-over establishment.

Connect

The 83 Winery recently renovated and opened the upstairs for private events. The space boasts a stunning hand-laid penny bar and lounge-style seating, with its own patio overlooking the grounds. It’s a lovely spot for intimate groups of up to 40 people. Downstairs there is a semi-private room for small events and groups are always welcome on the deck. The entire venue is available for buyouts for larger parties and events.

Enjoy!

If you’re in the mood for live music, The 83 Winery is the place to be. Every Thursday through Saturday from 8 pm to 11 pm, the deck comes alive with tunes from local musicians. It’s the perfect spot to sip on a signature cocktail like the “Watermelon Crawl” or “Tickled Pink” while enjoying the fall weather and good company.

Whether you’re a wine novice or a seasoned connoisseur, The 83 Winery invites you to come, sip, and explore. With wine flights for tasting, upcoming wine-paired dinners, and plenty of space to kick back, this family-run winery is fast becoming Harlingen’s go-to spot for good times and great wine.

Stop by, say hello to Beata, and become part of the family at The 83 Winery—where there’s always something to celebrate.

We had our drill team reunion here in the late summer and I was thrilled with the venue having a shiek and elegant ambience to dress up and sip on a signature cocktail or wine but comfy and cozy enough to let your hair down. Beata and her staff were so friendly and accommodating! Thank you!

Im looking forward to having a small get together over the holidays with friends at this lovely venue and excited that brunch will be introduced here soon!
